After School Activities for Kids in Faridabad: What First?

By Tiny Leap Team · Updated · 12 min read

Most articles on choosing a child's first sport compare benefits. Parents in Delhi NCR have a second problem that those articles ignore: the calendar. A mother in Delhi told Newslaundry last December what smog season had done to her seven-year-old's training.

He has already lost three months of Taekwondo practice

So this guide compares gymnastics, swimming, skating and martial arts for children aged 3 to 12 the way a Greater Faridabad family actually has to: what each one builds, what it costs to start, how children get hurt, and how many months of the year you can realistically do it near Sectors 75 to 89.

Disclosure: this guide is published by Tiny Leap Gymnastics Academy, a kids gymnastics academy in Sector 75, Faridabad. We are one of the options discussed, so weigh our view accordingly.

We run a gymnastics academy, so read our view on gymnastics with that in mind. We have tried to be fair. Gymnastics does not win every row below.

Swimming: the one with a safety payoff

Let us start with the activity that is not ours. If you can only ever teach your child one physical skill, swimming has the strongest case.

The World Health Organization counts around 300,000 drowning deaths a year worldwide. It lists drowning as the fourth leading cause of death for children aged 1 to 4 and the third for children aged 5 to 14, and recommends teaching school-age children basic swimming and water safety.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says lessons can begin for many children from age 1, that by their 4th birthday most children are ready, and that by 5 or 6 most children in lessons can master the front crawl. A paediatrician writing on the AAP's parent site goes further and calls swimming the best sport for children to learn first.

Two honest cautions. The AAP is clear that lessons are only one layer of protection and do not replace adult supervision. And forcing the pace can backfire, as an Indian parenting podcast found:

Sanchita tried formal swimming lessons with her twins and they hated it. This summer she simply let them splash with floats in the pool. One day her son removed the floats himself and started swimming.

Modern Indian Parent, Substack · 20 November 2025 · View original

The NCR catch is the season. The Delhi Development Authority lists its normal pools as open from 1 April to 30 September, and only its heated pools from 1 February to 30 November. That is Delhi's schedule, not Faridabad's, but it is a fair guide to how unheated pools in the region work. Ask your society or club for its own dates.

Year-round swimming needs a heated pool. In Greater Faridabad, MVN Exercise and Sports Academy in Sector 88 describes its pool as all-weather and temperature-controlled. We have not visited it and its page lists no fees or minimum age, so call before you plan around it.

Best for: every child, at some point. Weak spot: for most local families it is a six-month activity, not a twelve-month one.

Gymnastics: the broadest base, with limits

Gymnastics trains the things other sports assume a child already has: balance, grip and core strength, coordination, and knowing where the body is in the air. It is indoors, needs no kit beyond fitted clothes, and runs through heat, monsoon and winter.

On age, the AAP's guidance is a useful brake on enthusiasm. It says most children aged 2 to 5 do not yet have the motor skills for organised sport and do best with play-based movement such as running, swimming and tumbling. It lists gymnastics among suitable organised activities from 6 to 9. A class for a 3 or 4 year old should therefore look like guided play, not training. Our post on the right age to start gymnastics covers this band by band.

The honest downsides:

  • It does not teach water safety. Nothing in a gym replaces learning to swim.
  • It builds less stamina than swimming, which is continuous effort.
  • Children fall. A 2022 study of US emergency department data found that arm injuries dominate in younger gymnasts, with wrist and lower arm fractures more common in childhood than in adolescence. Recreational classes on mats are a different thing from competitive training, but the risk is not zero. See is gymnastics safe for kids.
  • There are few places to do it in Faridabad compared with taekwondo or dance.
  • Indoors does not mean clean air. A Delhi parent whose daughter does taekwondo and gymnastics put it plainly:

People think indoor means clean. It doesn’t

Purnima Raghunath, parent, Delhi, Newslaundry · 3 December 2025 · View original

Ask any indoor academy, including ours, what it does on severe AQI days.

Best for: children aged 3 to 8 who climb everything, and as a base for other sports later. Weak spot: availability, and no life-saving skill.

Skating: cheap to try, hard on wrists

Skating is the easiest activity to start in a housing society. There is usually a smooth stretch of compound, often a visiting coach, and the child can practise on non-class days.

We could not find a professional body that sets a starting age. Indian parents get mixed advice, as this mother wrote on an Indian forum:

Some of the coaches recommend a minimum of 41/2 years, while others do not insist on that.

sailaja, IndiaStudyChannel forum · View original

A reply in the same thread offers a sensible readiness test rather than a number:

Once and as soon as a kid is able to run, jump and play without losing his balance he should be ready to skate.

Anil Kumar Aitwal, IndiaStudyChannel forum · View original

That fits the AAP's note that balance is still limited between 2 and 5.

Cost. Skating needs the most kit. On Decathlon India's skating page on 28 September 2026, children's skates ran from ₹1,299 for quad skates to ₹5,999 for fitness inline skates, and a child's skating helmet was ₹999. Pads are extra.

Injuries. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons warns of fractures, dislocations and head injuries, and advises a helmet, wrist protectors, and knee and elbow pads every time, put on before the skates.

Season. Skating here is mostly outdoors, so it takes the full force of both difficult seasons, which we cover below.

Best for: children of about 5 and above with good balance, and families who want a low-commitment start. Weak spot: falls on hard ground, and lost months in summer afternoons and smog season.

Karate and taekwondo: structure and self-control

Martial arts are the easiest of the four to find. Around Neharpar, Fusion Fitness Academy in Sector 82 lists taekwondo for children aged 4 and above, and The Modern School in Sector 85 lists taekwondo and skating among its school sports. Many societies host a visiting instructor.

A 2025 medical review of youth martial arts reports benefits beyond fitness, including better self-control and lower stress. The belt system also gives children visible progress, which helps some children stick with it.

The same review lists injuries from sprains and strains to fractures and concussions, with the more severe cases in competitive settings, and says sparring is generally not recommended until children are at least 8 to 10. For a young child, look for classes built on forms and technique. The AAP lists martial arts among suitable organised activities from 6 to 9.

Best for: children who like rules and clear goals, and families who want something close to home all year. Weak spot: less climbing, hanging and upper-body work than gymnastics; contact risk later.

What the NCR calendar does to each activity

This is the part most comparison articles miss.

Smog season. In December 2025 the Commission for Air Quality Management wrote to the chief secretaries of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh asking for the immediate suspension of outdoor physical sports, warning of a "serious health risk to children". It had already asked for sports competitions in November and December to be postponed, following a Supreme Court order of 19 November.

Summer. Haryana closed schools from 1 to 30 June 2026 amid heatwave warnings. The Sunday Guardian reported that schools in Faridabad and Gurugram had shifted to morning timings, with health officials advising children to avoid outdoor activity in peak afternoon hours.

Some parents keep going outdoors regardless, and we understand why:

We have to live with air pollution.

Choose this if, choose that if

  • Choose swimming first if your child cannot swim and you have access to a pool with a qualified instructor, or if your family spends time near water. Start in April so you get the full season.
  • Choose gymnastics first if your child is 3 to 6, always climbing and jumping, and you want one activity that runs all year.
  • Choose taekwondo or karate first if your child responds to structure, or if the nearest good class is what you will actually attend twice a week.
  • Choose skating first if your child is about 5 or older, has steady balance, and you want to test interest before paying for a term. Buy the pads with the skates.
  • Choose none of them yet if your child is 3 and resists every class. Free play counts. The WHO asks for 180 minutes of varied physical activity a day for 3 and 4 year olds, and none of it has to be coached.

Combining two without overscheduling

A realistic year for a primary-school child in Greater Faridabad:

  1. One year-round indoor activity, twice a week.
  2. Swimming added from April to September, once or twice a week.
  3. In the swimming months, drop the year-round activity to once a week if evenings feel rushed.
  4. At least two weekday evenings with nothing booked.

For children aged 5 to 17 the WHO recommends an average of 60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous activity, with muscle and bone strengthening at least three days a week. Classes cover only part of that. Cycling, park time and running around the society cover the rest.

How many activities are too many?

We could not find a professional body that gives a number. What the AAP does say is that overscheduling and excessive training volume are risk factors for burnout, and that about 70 percent of children drop out of organised sport by age 13. Researchers writing in The Conversation add that overscheduling can crowd out unstructured play and leave children prone to stress.

Parents tend to land on a similar rule. In a Mumsnet thread about a 5 year old with five weekly activities, one reply said:

I would say set a limit on how many activities are feasible and let her pick (swimming a non negotiable as it’s a life skill).

otravezempezamos, Mumsnet · August 2024 · View original

And it is fine for a child to stop. Another parent described her son after he gave up his clubs:

Said he was so glad to not be rushing around to anything anymore.

daisydalrymple, Mumsnet · March 2025 · View original

Signs to cut back: your child is tired or tearful before class most weeks, sleep or meals are being squeezed, or there is no free evening left.

Use trial classes properly

Give a new activity a fair run before judging it. One bad first class tells you little. Tears every week for a month tell you to pause and try again later.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best first sport for a child: gymnastics, swimming or skating?

It depends on what you want from it. A paediatrician writing for the American Academy of Pediatrics' parent site calls swimming the best first sport because it also prevents drowning. Gymnastics gives the broadest base of balance, strength and coordination. Skating builds balance and is cheap to start. In NCR the calendar matters too: ordinary pools close for winter and outdoor sport is often stopped in smog season, so many families pair summer swimming with one year-round activity.

At what age can my child start swimming lessons?

The American Academy of Pediatrics says swim lessons can begin for many children from age 1, and that by their 4th birthday most children are ready for lessons. By 5 or 6 most children in lessons can learn the front crawl. It also says there is no evidence that programmes for babies under 1 lower drowning risk. Lessons are one layer of protection only. Children still need close adult supervision around water.

Do swimming pools in Delhi NCR stay open in winter?

Most ordinary pools do not. The Delhi Development Authority lists its normal pools as open from 1 April to 30 September and its heated all-weather pools from 1 February to 30 November. That is Delhi's public schedule, not Faridabad's, so check with your own society or club. In Greater Faridabad, MVN Exercise and Sports Academy in Sector 88 describes its pool as all-weather and temperature-controlled on its website.

Is it safe for children to do outdoor sports in Faridabad during pollution season?

The regulator says no on bad days. In December 2025 the Commission for Air Quality Management wrote to the chief secretaries of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh asking for immediate suspension of outdoor physical sports, calling it a serious health risk to children. It had earlier asked for sports competitions in November and December to be postponed. Indoor classes are not automatically clean-air spaces, so ask any academy how it handles severe AQI days.

How many after-school activities are too many for a 5 year old?

No professional body gives a fixed number that we could find. The American Academy of Pediatrics names overscheduling and excessive training as risk factors for burnout, and says about 70 percent of children drop out of organised sport by age 13. A workable rule for a 5 year old is one or two activities a week, with free evenings in between, and protected time for sleep, meals and unstructured play.

Is gymnastics or taekwondo better for a shy or very active child?

Both can suit either child, so use a trial class to decide. Martial arts classes are structured around forms, bowing and belts, which suits children who like clear rules and visible progress. Gymnastics is built around stations and movement puzzles, which suits children who need to climb, hang and jump. A 2025 review notes that sparring is generally not recommended until children are at least 8 to 10 years old.

What protective gear does my child need for skating?

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons advises a helmet, wrist protectors, and knee and elbow pads, put on before the skates. On Decathlon India's skating page on 28 September 2026, children's skates were listed from ₹1,299 to ₹5,999 and a child's skating helmet at ₹999. Budget for the pads as well, and replace gear as your child grows rather than buying a size up.
